Supervisor Termination Quick Guide

Use this guide for student employee performance concerns, performance improvement planning, and employment separation steps.

Performance Improvement

  • Address concerns early, including attendance, tardiness, communication, and work performance.
  • Clearly explain expectations, timelines, and follow-up steps.
  • Document conversations and progress throughout the improvement period.
  • If needed, consult with Workforce Development before moving to next steps.

Before Submitting a Termination

  • Document performance or conduct concerns.
  • Communicate expectations and provide an opportunity for improvement when appropriate.
  • Keep notes that support the reason selected on the termination form.

Termination Reasons

  • Involuntary Termination: Performance or conduct concerns.
  • Lack of Funds: Position funding has ended.
  • Resignation: Student chooses to leave the position.
  • Transfer: Student moves to another SRJC department.
  • Below Minimum Units: Student no longer meets enrollment requirements.
  • Program Completed: Student has completed a certificate or degree.
  • No Longer Enrolled: Student is no longer attending SRJC.
  • Other: Use when none of the listed categories apply.

Important Reminders

  • Student employees are at-will employees.
  • Fall and spring enrollment minimum: 6 units.
  • International student minimum: 12 units in fall and spring.
  • Summer enrollment minimum: 3 units.
  • Coordinate with IT if the student has college equipment or system access.
