What is LAEP?
LAEP = "Learning-Aligned Employment Program"
LAEP is a California Work Study program designed to get eligible students into paid work experiences that relate to their program of study. Work experiences can include jobs and internships both on-campus at SRJC and off-campus with companies licensed in the state of California.
What does "Learning-Aligned" mean?
Learning-aligned means the LAEP internship or job must be related to what the student is studying or the career interests the student may have. For example, a student studying Biology may be interested in working on campus in one of the labs. A student studying English Literature may be interested in working with a publication or publisher. A student studying Office Management may be interested in getting more experience working in an office. The intention of this grant is to get eligible students into work that is relative to the path they are on.
What Major or Certificate does a student need to be enrolled in?
Students from ALL programs of study are welcome to apply. Students must meet the eligibility requirements in order to participate, but there are currently no specifications regarding what classes or programs they must be enrolled in.
How does a student know if they are eligible to participate in LAEP?
This is a California statewide equity program designed to support students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. The eligibility requirements are listed on the Student Eligibility page. The Career Hub wants to work with ALL students, whether they are eligible for LAEP or not. Review the eligibility requirements, apply to participate, and follow up with one of our Job Developers for additional support on working in a field relative to your program of study.
Does the LAEP Grant guarantee work for students?
There are no guarantees for work for eligible students, however, the LAEP Coordinator is committed to working with students to connect them to work opportunities that will give them work experience in their fields of interest. Eligible students will be responsible for developing their resumes, researching potential companies, and working with the LAEP Coordinator to connect with potential employers.
Can a LAEP student work for a SRJC Faculty Member or Department?
The position must be approved by the LAEP Coordinator. That said, yes! On-campus positions are welcome provided that the work is relative to what the Student is studying. On-campus positions are also required to offer the student research work relative to their program of study. The research requirement does not have to be scientific in nature, and is an opportunity to dive deeper into the field, the work, or the industry.
How do students apply?
Review the Eligibility Requirements and then submit an application. Financial Aid will review the application to confirm eligibility. The LAEP Coordinator will then reach out with next steps.
